The Memphis Blues Again: Six Decades of Memphis Music Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (25 October, 2001)
Average review score:

extraordinary insight into 20th century americaaretha, elvis,bb king, jerry lee lewis, duke ellington sam cooke, al green, ray charles, helen humes, james brown, tina turner, the snearly ranch boys.. they all lived in or came to memphis to perform and record. this collection of images which spans four decades provides rare insight into the talent that was atrracted to and lived in this city which was the gateway from the oppression of mississippi.withers' photographs seem alive with the youth and exuberance of these young, legends in the making. the subjects seem oblivious to the camera and withers must have had carte blanche to capture the enegy and private moments of these american icons. any serious student of this country and the roots of its traditions should have this volume.daniel wolff has done all of us a favor in publishing the work of withers. it appears he has just scratched the surface
A Champion of AmericaErnest Withers is perhaps one of the true champions of the American civil rights movement and also one of the most important photographers of this century. In a gracious and unassuming manner, he was witness to a good deal of the civil rights events in the South, his weapon of eloquence - a camera. This book assembles some of his photographs of the blues and the rhythm and blues scene in Memphis. I cannot compare it to any other work, because it is unique and as much a part of our cultural history as anything that I have ever seen. It is a compelling document of the people and their environs and deserves a wider audience than it will probably earn. Spread the word.

Showdown in Memphis: An Epic Tale of the Forties
Published in Hardcover by Retrospective Productions (November, 1997)
Average review score:

Outstanding story and outstanding writingThis is a great read! The book provides a concise history of Memphis with some obscure but highly entertaining anecdotes. This sets the stage for the focus of the book, the coming to maturity of our society using Memphis as the platform to tell the story. The event used by the author is a football game played in 1943. The book goes on to follow the participants through the battlefields of Europe and campaigns of the Pacific. If you like the "Greatest Generation" you'll love this as the scope is broader, provides the imagination more leash and the author doesn't preach like Brokaw.
well written -I felt like I was there with the guys-I could hardly wait to see what happened to each one--looking forward to more writing from hammond--

Celebrating the Humanities: A Half-Century of the Search Course at Rhodes College
Published in Hardcover by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (October, 1996)
Average review score:

READ THIS BOOK!Mr. Nelson is god. One should read everything that he writes. In two thousand years people will be awaiting the second coming of Mike Nelson. Rhodes is a wonderful college, and I wish that I had been wise enough ( in my college days) to shun Yale for such a personalized undergraduate education

Da Nang to Memphis

Me..biased?..Never!This is a touching protrayel of love and determination and a search for answers that took many years and tears. Linda Moreau ,like her brother Mickey, was on a mission of her own to find out what exactly happened to him and the woman that he had fallen in love with in this far away country amidst the death and destruction that is war. She found a nephew that she never knew she had who was defintely created out of love and who has all the beautiful qualities of his father, and of course his mother who had to be a special lady for Mickey to have loved and married her..and I think that because of the bond that she and her brother had she felt destined to complete what she knew her brother would have done..to care for his family. This book also gave me alot of comfort, you see I have been wearing the MIA bracelet of Mickey Allen Wilson, Linda Moreaus' brother, for many years and he has been a part of my life and family even though I knew nothing about him, what he looked like, his family, whether he had any one to miss him after he was gone, anyone to welcome him home no matter how he got here..I have spoken to Linda Moreau thru e-mail and I offered her Mickeys' bracelet now that he has been accounted for and returned home and like any 'mother' it was like handing over a member of my family to strangers and now that I know the love this family shared and still share with his son and his wife I can surrender my Mickey to them with love in my heart. Having a brother myself who was a medic in vietnam I can't even begin to imagine what this family went through, it was hell for us but at least I have my brother, thank God. So this is my review of this book...Me..biased? Never!:):):)

The Glory of the Silk Road: Art from Ancient China
Published in Hardcover by Dayton Art Inst (January, 2003)
Average review score:

Book beats exhibitionI recommend this book highly. I enjoyed the Dayton Art Institute show on which it is based, but missed having archeological background on the show placards. The photography in the book is excellent, and for the tiniest artifacts, it's actually easier to see them in the book than in the show. Every article in the show is also in the book. Production quality is very high. The text narratives are by serious scholars, mostly Chinese or hyphen-Chinese, and the English translations are fluent and idiomatic.
Having been to several Silk-Road shows and having read several books on the subject, I've reached the point where I'm impressed by how much we don't know about the silk road--authorities disagree, and everyone uses different names for the same place. Perhaps it's time for a definitive study?

Graceland: The Living Legacy of Elvis Presley
Published in Hardcover by Collins Pub San Francisco (October, 1993)
Average review score:

If you never been there that book will take you in!Beautiful pictures, truly great text full of interesting
citations and quotes that book his definitely the best
about the house Elvis presley live in; Graceland.
Sure, a beautiful mansion but with also an history "hors
du commun"!
If your wish is to visit Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee
and you just can't that book is for you. You can trust me
'cause I've been there and it's simply amazing at how
the images reflect all the appartments with the real
dimensions, maybe it's more interesting then the tour
himself because that show you from impossible angle how
Elvis could see his home.
It's a big book, very well illustrated, rich in words and
descriptions, the one of a kind "Graceland Dictionnary".
I'm sure that this book would still remain a treasure in his
own subject!
Look at Graceland by theses pages, you won't believe it!

Gracious Goodness: The Taste of Memphis
Published in Hardcover by Memphis Symphony League (January, 1990)
Average review score:

One of our Top 2 CookbooksWe have many cookbooks and this book along with another cookbook, Heart and Soul - Stirring Recipes from Memphis, are our two favorites that we always consult first for something really good. We've given both books as gifts many times and people who like to cook love them. This book is beautiful and has a page devoted to a Southern event in each section. Although it is a little bit difficult to sometimes find a particular recipe because of all the sections, it is still a great cookbook. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. It is a beauty and am proud to be from Memphis with a cookbook like this published there!

Memphis Beat : The Lives and Times of America's Musical Crossroads
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (April, 1998)
Average review score:

A truly whole and telling history of Memphis musicThis is one of the best books I have ever read about Memphis music. It focused on many of the things that other books overlook, while still retaining the heart of Memphis which is THE BLUES. Larry Nager has a very good understanding of the atmosphere and attitudes of the people in Memphis, since he lived there for several years. The book is thorough in its coverage of everyone from Elvis to Phineas Newborn Jr. to Otis Redding. I highly recommend this to the Memphis music novice or the avid Memphis history collector.
